Walk this trail May-October: that is not just a comfort recommendation but the window the National Trail itself asks walkers to stick to, because the central section has no hard path and sits directly over fragile archaeology that winter mud damages. Climate is a genuine gradient along the route — the central Northumberland uplands around Hexham (colder, more frost, but slightly drier overall) versus Carlisle and the Solway lowlands at the western end (milder but wetter, with more rain days, especially in autumn). May, June and September give the best combination of dry ground and manageable crowds; July-August have the most reliable weather but the heaviest day-visitor traffic at the fort sites. Outside May-October the trail is walkable in short bursts on the hard-surfaced sections near Newcastle and Carlisle, but the central turf section is specifically what you're being asked to leave alone.
