Eating on the trail
Both ends of this walk are genuinely good for vegan food. Newcastle has a proper vegan pub (The Carriage) and a strong independent scene, and Carlisle has Italian and Mediterranean kitchens that do real vegan versions of their dishes rather than a side salad. The middle, along the Wall itself, is farming and pub country: the Twice Brewed Inn near Housesteads, the only pub actually on the central Wall section, lists vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options on its regular menu, which matters because there's little else out there for miles. Hexham, a short bus ride or detour south of the path, has two dedicated vegan-menu cafes (Small World Cafe, Hextol Tans) and is worth the diversion on a rest day.

This isn't a region with a strong plant-based heritage dish, so the best eating is what the towns at either end have built rather than a Northumbrian classic: Sky Apple Cafe's vegan cakes and Earthlings' all-vegan menu in Newcastle, or Casa Romana's mushroom cannelloni and risotto arrosto in Carlisle, cooked vegan on request by a kitchen with 30 years of practice rather than as a last-minute substitution.
The usual UK own-brand ranges apply, Tesco Plant Chef, Co-op GRO and Sainsbury's Plant Pioneers are the most consistently rated, and both Newcastle and Carlisle have full-range supermarkets. Smaller wall villages (Corbridge, Haltwhistle, Gilsland) generally run to a Co-op or Spar with a narrower selection.

Carlisle, the finish: Cakes & Ale (vegetarian/vegan lunches, gluten-free cakes, near the cathedral), Casa Romana (vegan-friendly Italian on request) and Sage & Vine (veggie sharing board with banana blossom 'fish').
Sky Apple Cafe's vegan cakes and Glazed's house-made vegan donuts are both worth a stop in Newcastle before setting out. Cakes & Ale in Carlisle does proper gluten-free and vegan cake at the finish, in the same building as an independent bookshop.
Newcastle, at the start, is the best-stocked city on the whole route, worth buying more than one day's food here if the next stretch is uncertain. Hexham, though a detour off the path, is worth the diversion for its two dedicated vegan-menu cafes if a rest day allows it. Carlisle covers the final stretch.
A pub 'vegetable soup' or 'vegetable pie' in a Wall-country pub is not automatically vegan. Stock cubes and butter pastry are still the default unless the menu explicitly marks a vegan option, so it's worth asking even at a place like the Twice Brewed Inn that does cater properly for vegans.
