Most walkers reach Wallsend via Newcastle: Newcastle Central station is served by Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, LNER, Lumo, Northern and TransPennine Express, per Hadrian's Wall Country's own travel page, then it's a short Tyne and Wear Metro ride (a handful of stops, roughly 15–20 minutes) direct to Wallsend, from where Segedunum Roman Fort and the trail start are a couple of minutes' walk. Flying in, Newcastle International Airport connects to the same Metro network (change at Monument for Wallsend), about 35–40 minutes total.

By car, the A69/A1 corridor reaches Newcastle from east or west.
Bowness-on-Solway has no railway station and no parking of its own. The standard route out is Stagecoach bus 93 to Carlisle (Monday-Saturday only — no Sunday service found, so a Sunday finish needs a taxi or a pre-arranged lift), then Avanti West Coast or ScotRail mainline trains onward from Carlisle station (CRS: CAR) — Edinburgh is under three hours away, and the West Coast Main Line reaches London, Glasgow and the north-west directly.
A strictly linear 84-mile trail, but unlike a remote Highland trail it is bracketed at both ends by mainline rail (Newcastle in the east, Carlisle in the west), so most walkers simply take trains to the start and from the finish rather than relocating a car. Neither actual endpoint has a genuine long-stay car park — Wallsend has no dedicated facility and Bowness-on-Solway has explicitly none at all — so drivers tend to leave a car in Newcastle (station or airport long-stay, see parking) or in Carlisle (e.g. the Rome Street Depot secure car park, £68/week) and use the Metro/bus/train to close the gap to the actual trailhead at each end.
This is an unusually easy trail to bail out of. The Tyne Valley line (Northern Trains) runs close to or through the corridor for almost the entire route west of Newcastle, calling at Wylam, Corbridge, Hexham and Haltwhistle, two or three trains an hour. On top of that, three bus routes now cover almost every remaining stretch: the Tyne and Wear Metro for the first ~9km out of Wallsend, the 122 (formerly AD122, now year-round daily) along the central Chollerford-Once Brewed-Gilsland corridor, and the new (Jan 2026) HW1 covering Carlisle out to Gilsland/Greenhead hourly, year-round. The only real gap is that bus 93 to/from Bowness-on-Solway itself doesn't run on Sundays. There is no stretch here comparable to Rannoch Moor or Loch Lomond's road-free east shore on the West Highland Way — a station or bus stop is rarely more than a short walk from the path.
Tyne and Wear Metro runs direct from the airport station into Newcastle, changing at Monument for the branch to Wallsend; allow around 35–40 minutes total door to door with the change, per journey-planner data checked. Described by Hadrian's Wall Country's own site as '31 miles to the heart of Hadrian's Wall country' — i.e. it's a genuine gateway but not itself close to the trail.
