Eating on the trail

Vegan food on the South Downs Way

Both ends of the South Downs Way land you somewhere genuinely good for vegan food: Winchester has plant-based pizza and a vegan-pasty bakery, and Eastbourne has a 100% vegan restaurant plus a seafront pub running a proper seven-main vegan menu rather than a single marked dish. Lewes, close to the route roughly two-thirds of the way along, has a fully vegan Korean café and a coffee roastery with a genuinely vegan lunch menu. Petersfield, a short detour near Buriton close to the start, has a health-food café built around plant-based eating. The downland villages the trail actually threads through, Amberley, Arundel, Steyning, Alfriston, are thinner: real cafes and tea rooms exist, but none confirmed here as running a dedicated vegan menu, so treat them as bread-and-a-jacket-potato stops rather than a destination.

The overall shape is good anchor towns at sensible intervals rather than density along the whole 100 miles.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

Sussex's heritage dishes (Southdown lamb, Sussex pond pudding) aren't vegan and don't have an easy substitute worth chasing. What's genuinely worth ordering instead is the café food that's grown up in Lewes and Eastbourne: a vegan chilli or pulled-jackfruit sandwich at Trading Post Coffee Roasters in Lewes, or a full vegan Sunday-style plate, sausage and mash, or a Beyond Meat burger, at the Crown and Anchor in Eastbourne, a traditional seafront pub that built a proper vegan menu rather than adding one dish.

What to buy

The usual UK own-brand ranges apply, Tesco Plant Chef, Co-op GRO and Sainsbury's Plant Pioneers are the most consistently rated, and Winchester, Lewes and Eastbourne all have full-range supermarkets. The Bran Hub in Petersfield is a dedicated health-food shop with a strong vegan stock, useful for topping up on things a standard supermarket won't carry.

Good places on the trail

Winchester, the start: Three Joes Sourdough Pizza (plant-based options) and a Cornish Bakery branch selling vegan pasties. Petersfield, a short detour near Buriton: The Natural Food Deli and The Bran Hub health-food shop. Lewes: Trading Post Coffee Roasters (vegan chilli, pulled-jackfruit sandwich, tofu on toast, falafel salad) and Cafe Vegu (fully vegan Korean café). Eastbourne, the finish: The Good Grub (Eastbourne's only 100% vegan restaurant), the Crown and Anchor (seafront pub, dedicated vegan menu of seven mains and five desserts), and Perch in Princes Park (vegan breakfast, vegan burger, tofish and chips).

Trail treats

The Crown and Anchor in Eastbourne does a vegan apple pie with ice cream and a Biscoff cheesecake as proper desserts, not an afterthought. The Cornish Bakery branch in Winchester carries the same vegan pasty range found on the South West Coast Path, a good grab-and-go start to the walk.

Where to restock

Winchester, at the start, is the best-stocked town on the whole route, worth buying more than one day's food here before the quieter Hampshire and West Sussex downland. Petersfield (via the Buriton detour) is a useful second top-up around the quarter mark. Lewes is the last sizeable town with a full supermarket before the final stretch over the Seven Sisters into Eastbourne.

Things that may not be vegan

A pub 'vegetable soup' or 'vegetable pie' on the Downs is not automatically vegan. Stock cubes and butter pastry are still the default in traditional Sussex kitchens unless the menu explicitly marks a vegan option, so it's worth asking rather than assuming outside places like the Crown and Anchor that have built a real vegan menu.
