Fishermen's Trail (Trilho dos Pescadores) accommodation: where to stay and how to plan it
Get Oot's current research covers 127 places along or near the Fishermen's Trail (Trilho dos Pescadores). Availability still depends on your exact dates and stage pattern, so choose the itinerary first and check the whole trip together.
What makes accommodation planning different here
Rota Vicentina runs a direct-booking network of 100+ partner accommodations along the trail rather than one shared booking system: each listing has its own contact form and hikers book straight with the host, with the site's FAQ/booking page stating hosts should be contacted 'without commissions or intermediaries.' No package-only requirement was found for independent walkers; some tour operators sell inclusive packages but that is a separate product from the trail's own network. No official guidance on how many weeks/months ahead to book in high season was found on the official site. Rota Vicentina states the trail 'can be walked in both directions, between the months of September and June' (rotavicentina.com). Third-party guides describe the shoulder months (May–early June, late August–September) as the most reliable weather window, and note the high-summer months (July–August) as too hot and best avoided, though the trail itself is not physically closed then. Wild camping is not permitted: the Fishermen's Trail runs through the Natural Park of the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, and Rota Vicentina's own FAQ states plainly: 'The Fishermen's Trail is located within the Natural Park of the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, so it is forbidden to camp, to spend the night, to make bonfires, to leave trash, to collect firewood, or to carry out any other activities that disturb the nature and the surrounding space.' Camping is only legal at registered campsites. Rota Vicentina's own accommodation network lists only 6 campsites for the whole trail (Vila Nova de Milfontes, Odeceixe, Lagos, Sagres, Budens/Salema, plus one inland at S. Luís), several overnight stops (Almograve, Zambujeira do Mar itself has an independent one outside the RV network, Aljezur, Arrifana, Carrapateira, Vila do Bispo) have no official campsite at all, so campers either divert off-route to an independent site or don't camp there. The southern end (Lagos) has direct train and bus links to Lisbon and Faro, both with international airports; from Sagres there are buses to Lagos and on to Faro (eva-bus.com). The northern end (Porto Covo/Vila Nova de Milfontes) is reached by Rede Expressos coach from Lisbon's Sete Rios bus station. Only one seasonal daily bus runs to Porto Covo itself (about 2 hours 30 minutes), so many walkers instead take the more frequent bus to Vila Nova de Milfontes and cover the short remaining distance to Porto Covo separately.
